What Time Do Schools Announce Snow Days?

Most US school districts announce snow days between 5:00 AM and 7:00 AM on the morning of the closure. A smaller share will call it the night before when a Winter Storm Warning is already in effect and roads will clearly not recover. If you are refreshing at 9 PM hoping for a final answer, you are usually early. If you are still waiting at 8 AM, you already missed the window most transportation directors use.

This is a planning guide. Your district’s posted procedure always wins.

The decision clock superintendents actually use

  1. 4:00 to 5:00 AM: Transportation staff and, in many districts, a superintendent or operations chief drive representative bus routes. They look at untreated side streets, hills, and whether snow is still falling.
  2. 5:00 to 6:00 AM: The call is made. This is also when first-tier buses would start rolling in a normal day.
  3. 5:30 to 7:00 AM: The notice goes out on the district site, app, text list, radio, and local TV crawl.
  4. After 7:00 AM: Late calls still happen when a band of snow or ice arrives later than forecast, but they strand families who already left for work. Districts hate this outcome and try to avoid it.

That is why a calculator that only uses a 24-hour snowfall total is a weak product. The hours that matter are the ones overlapping the bus depot clock. Our Snow Day Calculator scores the 4 to 7 AM window on purpose.

Night-before announcements

A night-before close is more likely when all of these are true:

  • A Winter Storm Warning (not just an Advisory) is up for the overnight period.
  • Ice or freezing rain is the main threat, not dry powder.
  • The district has already used the “we will decide in the morning” card on a similar storm and got burned.
  • State police or the city has said roads will not be passable by dawn.

Even then, many large urban districts still wait for the 5 AM road check. Chicago, New York City, and Boston have enough plow capacity that an evening forecast is not treated as destiny.

Typical announcement windows by area

Times below are the usual public-notice windows, not a promise. Always join the district’s own alert list.

Area Usual notice window Where families actually see it
New England (Boston, Providence, Hartford) 5:00 to 6:30 AM District site, ParentSquare/SchoolMessenger, local TV
New York City DOE Often by 5:00 to 6:00 AM, sometimes earlier for citywide weather schools.nyc.gov, Notify NYC, 311
Upstate NY (Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Albany) 5:00 to 6:30 AM; lake-effect can force later updates District app plus local radio. Lake-effect bands move the target.
Pennsylvania / Ohio / Michigan 5:00 to 7:00 AM District call/text. Metro Detroit reporting in 2026 still described a dawn road check as standard.
Illinois / Wisconsin / Minnesota 5:00 to 6:30 AM CPS and suburban districts post separately. Do not assume CPS = your suburb.
Colorado / Utah 5:00 to 6:30 AM, corridor by corridor Foothills can close while the valley stays open. Check your specific district, not the city name.
Mid-Atlantic (Philadelphia, DC suburbs) 5:00 to 6:30 AM; ice events sometimes night-before County-level alerts plus district texts
South (Atlanta, Charlotte, Nashville, Dallas) Often evening-before when ice is named, otherwise 5:00 to 6:00 AM District social accounts move first because events are rare and chaotic

How to get the call without waking up at 4:55 AM

  1. Turn on your district’s official text or app. That is the only channel that counts.
  2. Follow the district on whatever network they still update (many have left X; many still post there first).
  3. Use a forecast tool the night before so you can plan childcare either way. Check your ZIP on SnowDayCalc.net.
  4. If you ride a regional bus co-op, the bus company can cancel when the district stays open. Watch both.

Delays vs closures

A two-hour delay is the compromise when snow is ending at dawn and plows need a little more time. If your calculator shows a moderate probability, a delay is often the live outcome in plow-rich cities. Rural districts skip the delay and close because a 10:00 AM start still leaves 40 miles of bad road.

Frequently asked questions

What time do schools announce snow days?

Most US schools announce between 5 AM and 7 AM. Road checks start around 4 AM. Night-before announcements happen mainly when ice or a warning-level storm is already locked in.

Why do some districts wait so late?

Forecasts are often off by an inch or two. Transportation directors trust a 4 AM tire on the road more than a 10 PM model run.

Can I get notified the night before?

You can get a probability the night before from a calculator, and you can join a district alert list. Only the district can send the official call. If we send an email or SMS alert, it is a forecast aid, not a closure order.
